German energy company RWE (RWEG.DE) has extended Chief Executive Markus Krebber’s contract by five years, securing his leadership through June 2031, the company said on Tuesday.
Krebber, who joined RWE in 2012 and became CEO in 2021, will continue to guide the group through a period the company describes as marked by “electrification and artificial intelligence.”
“With him as CEO, the company has an outstanding leader at its helm,” said supervisory board chairman Frank Appel. “He has resolutely positioned RWE for the future energy landscape.”
Appel credited Krebber with helping navigate geopolitical challenges and contributing to the company’s response during the recent energy crisis. “Thanks to its broad technological and regional scope, the group is now ideally placed to capitalise on the growth resulting from rising electricity demand and electrification,” he added.
Employee representatives on RWE’s supervisory board also supported the decision. Deputy chairman Michael Vassiliadis highlighted Krebber’s management style during periods of transition. “Even during periods of significant change, RWE’s corporate culture has always been characterised by trust and constructive collaboration,” Vassiliadis said. “In Markus Krebber we have a CEO who knows that our employees are the key to the company’s success.”
Krebber expressed appreciation for the board’s confidence, noting the opportunities presented by the energy transition. “The age of electrification and artificial intelligence offers excellent conditions for profitable growth and sustainable value enhancement at RWE,” he said.
RWE has been shifting its portfolio towards renewables while managing the phasing-out of coal. The contract extension signals continuity in the company’s long-term strategy amid evolving energy markets.
