UK renewables developer OnPath Energy has commenced construction on the £155 million Mill Rig Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, the company said on Tuesday, marking a key milestone in the project’s development.
The 33.4-megawatt (MW) onshore wind farm is expected to become operational in 2026 and generate enough electricity to power around 45,000 homes annually. The project will include some of the UK’s most advanced wind turbines, aimed at maximising energy efficiency.
Construction is already underway, with infrastructure work such as access roads, substation foundations, and site preparation progressing. Turbine foundation work and crane pad installation will follow in the coming months. Delivery of turbine components is expected in autumn 2025, with installation and commissioning scheduled for early 2026.
“Breaking ground on Mill Rig is a huge milestone for OnPath Energy and a major step forward in delivering this strategically important renewable energy project,” said Alan Wells, project manager at OnPath Energy. “The start of construction marks the culmination of extensive planning, environmental assessments, and collaboration with local stakeholders.”
The Hamilton-based firm estimates the project will directly support around 300 jobs during construction, with additional employment generated through the wider supply chain. OnPath said it is prioritising local contractors and expects to invest £91 million within a 60km radius of the site.
“Beyond delivering clean, green electricity, Mill Rig Wind Farm represents a major opportunity to invest in local talent, create jobs, and provide long-term economic value,” Wells said.
As part of its OnPath Together community-focused development strategy, the company has committed to a £5 million community fund over the wind farm’s lifetime. South Lanarkshire Council is also expected to receive approximately £18 million in business rates from the project.
Construction contractor RJ McLeod has been awarded the main contract for the project.
This is our fourth project with the OnPath team,” said Locran Hayes, contracts manager at RJ McLeod. “We look forward to jointly delivering this important energy asset.
Mill Rig Wind Farm is part of Scotland’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy generation as it targets net-zero emissions in the coming decades.
