EDF Power Solutions has acquired the 500-megawatt Gate Burton Energy Park from UK-based renewable developer Low Carbon, marking a key transaction in the country’s post-election clean energy sector.
The project, located in Lincolnshire, received a Development Consent Order (DCO) in July 2024. It is among the first large-scale Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) to advance following the 2024 general election. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 160,000 homes annually.
In addition to solar generation, Gate Burton includes co-located battery storage infrastructure aimed at enhancing grid flexibility and supporting renewable integration during periods of intermittent supply.
“This milestone marks the next step forward for Gate Burton,” said Roy Bedlow, chief executive of Low Carbon. “This agreement underscores our track record of delivering high-quality renewable assets and our growth as a leading independent power producer.”
EDF said the acquisition aligns with its strategic objective to expand its solar and energy storage portfolio in the UK.
“We’re excited to bring this project into our growing portfolio,” said Matthew Boulton, director of solar, storage and private wire at EDF Power Solutions UK.
Low Carbon stated that proceeds from the sale will support its broader development pipeline, which includes more than 1GW of operational and under-construction assets. The company also plans to begin construction on over 400MW of additional UK-based solar and battery storage projects within the next 18 months.
