Dutch energy storage developer GIGA Storage has acquired a large-scale battery project in Germany, marking the company’s first step into the German energy market.
The project, known as Project Albatross, has a planned capacity of 350 megawatts (MW) and 1,400 megawatt-hours (MWh), and is located near Merzen in the state of Lower Saxony. The project was originally developed by Germany-based Isenau Projects and is expected to support grid stability by providing services such as frequency regulation and congestion management.
GIGA Storage described the acquisition as a key milestone in its international expansion strategy. The company said it will provide development capital, technical expertise, and operational support to move the project to a construction-ready phase.
“Our ambition is to develop and operate multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity across Europe in the coming years,” GIGA Storage CEO Kevin Dijkers said in a statement. “With the support of InfraVia and our growing project pipeline, we are making significant strides toward this goal – contributing to both energy security and sustainability in key European markets.”
InfraVia Capital Partners, a European infrastructure investment firm, is the majority shareholder of GIGA Storage and is backing the acquisition.
Isenau Projects, which specializes in the development of battery storage systems from early-stage planning to construction readiness, welcomed the partnership.
“We are excited to collaborate with GIGA Storage on Project Albatross,” said Sven Moos, managing director of Isenau Projects. “This transaction reflects our focus on high-quality BESS projects that meet the needs of grid operators, investors, and policymakers.
Project Albatross is expected to play a role in the integration of renewable energy sources in one of Germany’s major energy corridors. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
