The Welsh government has unveiled a strategic plan aimed at unlocking the economic potential of more than 15 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity that could be developed in Welsh waters, outlining steps to strengthen local supply chains, attract investment, and create long-term jobs.
The report, published by the government’s Offshore Wind Task and Finish Group, includes a series of recommendations to boost the regional economic impact of offshore wind. These include reforms to planning processes, port infrastructure upgrades, increased visibility on future Crown Estate leasing rounds, and the establishment of a dedicated implementation team within the Welsh government.
Among the priorities is attracting a major engineering and construction contractor to base operations in Wales in order to “anchor economic activity” locally.
Ajai Ahluwalia, head of supply chain at industry body RenewableUK, described the strategy as a timely and pragmatic response to industry needs.
“We are pleased to see clear, practical actions that respond directly to industry calls for greater certainty, stronger collaboration and urgent delivery,” Ahluwalia said. “Offshore wind is one of the UK’s greatest industrial opportunities – with the potential to transform Wales’ heartland sectors, like steel and advanced manufacturing.
According to the report, over the next decade offshore wind could generate £32 billion in economic value across the UK, including an estimated £4.8 billion for Welsh businesses and 3,370 skilled jobs.
“To unlock that value we must now move swiftly from planning to implementation – and industry stands ready to work with government to make that happen,” Ahluwalia added.
