German energy group RWE and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have signed a strategic framework agreement to broaden their partnership in clean energy delivery and digital transformation, the companies said on Wednesday.
Under the agreement, RWE will continue to provide carbon-free electricity to support the growth of Amazon’s data centre operations, while AWS will deliver cloud services, including artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics, to accelerate RWE’s digitalisation efforts.
“This strategic framework agreement with AWS represents a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting the digital infrastructure that powers our modern economy with clean energy,” said Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer of RWE Supply & Trading.
Kerstin added that increasing digitalisation and electrification are driving electricity demand: “Our competitive portfolio of renewable and flexible energy generation is ideally suited to meet this demand.”
AWS, the cloud computing unit of Amazon, will also support RWE in optimising its commercial operations and forecasting capabilities through AI technologies.
“Through this expanded collaboration with RWE, we’ll continue to explore new sources of carbon-free energy to help decarbonise our operations,” said Howard Gefen, general manager for energy and utilities at AWS. “Using advanced capabilities like artificial intelligence and analytics, we’ll help RWE accelerate their digital transformation, enabling smarter decision-making and enhanced operational performance throughout their energy business.”
The companies have previously signed seven power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the United States, totalling 1.1 gigawatts (GW), backed by electricity from RWE’s wind and solar projects—some already operational and others under construction.
AWS has also supported RWE in migrating key trading applications to the cloud, delivering a 30% improvement in end-of-day performance, according to the company.
The new agreement is expected to strengthen RWE’s innovation in areas such as energy trading, asset optimisation and AI-powered forecasting, while also expanding collaboration between AWS and RWE’s AI Research Laboratory in Seattle.
