Renewable energy company Zelestra has signed an agreement with Chinese energy technology firm Sungrow to supply battery storage technology for one of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Latin America.
Under the deal, Sungrow will deliver its PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled BESS and MV Power Conversion Units for a 1 GWh storage facility that forms part of the hybrid Aurora project in Tarapacá, northern Chile. The scheme also includes a 220 MWdc solar plant equipped with Sungrow’s 1+X Modular Inverter system.
The project is designed to supply Chilean energy firm Abastible with solar power during nighttime hours under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), expanding the company’s zero-emissions portfolio. Abastible is one of Chile’s leading energy providers, active in both liquefied natural gas and electricity markets.
“With this major agreement, we have secured some of the most advanced BESS technology available in the market,” said Leo Moreno, CEO of Zelestra. “This is an important milestone for the Aurora project, as we advance towards the delivery of this highly customized hybrid solution.”
Construction of the Aurora project is already underway. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 600 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to power 200,000 Chilean homes. The battery storage units are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2025.
“We are proud to partner with Zelestra on the landmark Aurora project,” said Jack Gu, Vice Chairman at Sungrow. “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to accelerating the energy transition in Chile and across the region.”
Zelestra’s Latin American portfolio includes more than 7 GW of renewable energy projects, with over 1.7 GW currently contracted, under construction, or operational. The company was recently ranked among the top 10 global corporate clean energy sellers by BloombergNEF, and second in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
