Spanish renewable energy company Grenergy has initiated a reverse auction in Chile to sell nearly 1.7 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually from its solar and battery storage assets, the company said on Thursday.
The auction, run through Grenergy’s local commercialisation arm GR Power, targets energy generators, retailers, and large-scale consumers seeking to secure supply over the coming years.
The initiative includes 1,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year of battery-stored energy for nighttime use and 300 GWh of solar generation, with deliveries scheduled between the first half of 2026 and the first half of 2027.
“This reverse auction offers an innovative and competitive way of buying and selling energy,” the company said in a statement.
It marks the second time Grenergy has organised its own clean energy auction, following a similar initiative in March 2022. The earlier auction made Grenergy the first renewable energy producer in Latin America to adopt this model.
The company said the auction format broadens access to a wider range of participants, including independent generators and corporates focused on decarbonisation.
The process is being conducted via Match Energia, a local electricity trading platform. The application period is currently open and will close on May 6.
Grenergy has operated in Chile for over a decade and holds one of the country’s largest clean energy portfolios, with 4.1 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and 18.3 gigawatt-hours of battery storage under development. That includes the Oasis de Atacama project, which the company says will be among the largest battery systems globally.
