Kelag, an Austrian energy company, has acquired the Steinberger Alpe and Soboth wind farm from ECOwind, a subsidiary of BayWa's renewables division. The wind farm has a capacity of 26MW and is located east of Klagenfurt, making it the first of its kind in the province of Carinthia.
The eight wind turbines, which were commissioned in the summer of 2022, generate approximately 60,000MWh of green electricity annually at a height of 1,400 to 1,600 meters. This amount of electricity is enough to power around 13,000 Austrian households per year, making a significant contribution to Austria's transition towards renewable energy.
The acquisition of Steinberger Alpe and Soboth marks the second wind farm purchase by Kelag from BayWa r.e. In 2020, Kelag acquired the 10MW wind farm Orjak in Croatia.
Managing Director of ECOwind, Johann Janker, expressed his satisfaction with the successful completion of the wind farm, saying: “During project development and construction in alpine terrain, our experience from previous projects was of great value. Thanks to an outstanding team performance and the involvement of local stakeholders, we were able to commission the wind farm last summer after only a few weeks of construction.”
Kelag expects to complete the acquisition of Steinberger Alpe and Soboth in May. This purchase is another step forward for the company in achieving its goal of providing sustainable energy to Austria and beyond.
