SSE Renewables has officially launched construction on its first onshore project in Italy, the 17.3MW Puglia project. The wind farm, located in the southern Puglia region, will be developed across two sites: Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva.

The project will feature five Siemens Gamesa 132-3.4MW onshore wind turbines. Initial construction activities include the preparation of foundations and enabling works to ensure access to the sites. Once these preliminary works are complete, the installation of the turbines will begin.

Idoka Construzioni, an Italian construction firm, has been appointed as the principal contractor for the project, which is expected to create up to 70 construction jobs at its peak.

“We are thrilled to have construction underway on our Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm sites in Puglia, our first project in Italy,” said Gianluca Mercurio, SSE Renewables' country manager. “We will be working closely with our contractors and supply chain partners as we look to complete construction of this strategic project.”

Mercurio emphasized the significance of the wind farm for Italy's climate and energy goals, adding, “The wind farm will play a part in helping Italy and the Puglia region reach climate targets, helping to strengthen energy security and generating homegrown renewable energy.
