Dutch developer Lion Storage has successfully reached financial close for its Mufasa project, one of the largest battery systems (BESS) in Europe. The 350MW project, set to be operational in the first half of 2027, will be located in Vlissingen, in the port of Zeeland, a key hub for transit in the Netherlands.

Mufasa marks the first large-scale battery storage project in the country to secure full project funding, totaling over €350 million. The project is backed by Macquarie Capital as lead investor, alongside TINC, Return investors, and six banks.

The BESS will utilize Tesla's Megapack 2 XL, a large-scale energy storage solution. With a capacity of 350MW, the system will be able to charge and discharge 1400MWh multiple times a day, enough to power more than 200,000 households. Tesla is also providing engineering, procurement, and construction services, along with a long-term service agreement.

Mufasa will replace the connection of a former coal-fired power plant to the high-voltage grid, marking a significant shift towards renewable energy storage in the region. Eneco, a project partner, will use the battery to help balance supply and demand in the renewable energy market.

Arno Hendriks, co-founder of Lion Storage, commented, “Project Mufasa is a game changer in battery storage in the Netherlands. As the first project to secure full project funding, it proves that energy storage is not only feasible, but also offers an attractive investment opportunity.”

Co-founder Jeroen Althoff added, “With cutting-edge technology and strong strategic partners, we are building a smarter and more resilient energy system and setting the standard for the future of energy storage in Europe.”

The Mufasa project is set to play a crucial role in advancing energy storage solutions in Europe as the region moves toward greater integration of renewable energy.
