Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch has clarified that the new 20MW-plus offshore turbine being installed in Denmark by Siemens Gamesa is strictly a test unit. The turbine, with an approximate 21.5MW nameplate rating, is currently being assembled at Osterild as part of a prototype testing process.
Bruch addressed concerns raised by the industry, stating, “People are getting worked up” about the turbine, emphasizing that the unit’s purpose is to evaluate the commercial viability of the platform. He added that a decision on its future commercial potential will be made “at a later point.”
Siemens Gamesa aims to use the SG DD-276 model, with a 276-meter rotor, as a step toward establishing itself as a global leader in offshore wind energy. Bruch highlighted that the testing process is crucial for understanding the technology’s limitations and advancing offshore wind capabilities.
The prototype, certified by DNV, has until 2027 to further develop the model, as per the Danish wind turbine certification authority’s guidelines.
