BW ESS and Mirai Power have signed a strategic agreement to co-develop up to 1GW of systems (BESS) in southern Germany. The partnership highlights the growing potential for large-scale energy storage in the region, with expectations of a fivefold increase in storage capacity by 2026.

Mirai Power, based in Munich, is a developer of BESS focused on the European market, while BW ESS has an extensive energy storage pipeline across global markets. The companies aim to leverage Germany's rising prominence as a growth hub for energy storage, with an estimated 7GWh of new storage expected to be added by 2026.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on originating and developing storage projects across southern Germany. Roberto Jiménez, executive director of BW ESS, praised the partnership, stating, “The Mirai team share many of the same attributes as our own team – they are pragmatic, move fast and have shown considerable commercial acumen. Most importantly, they share our commitment to unlocking the value of energy storage.

Marco Frascati, managing director of Mirai Power, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “Southern Germany is a region with huge energy storage development potential, and our partnership with a global leader like BW ESS will help us accelerate our efforts to decarbonise the energy system.
