Source Galileo has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Portland Port, located on the south coast of England, to explore and maximize opportunities for offshore wind development in the region.
The MoU focuses on supporting the 2GW PortWind offshore wind project, currently under development by Source Galileo off the Dorset coast in the English Channel. The agreement aims to enhance local port infrastructure, improve the supply chain, and deliver community benefits onshore, while also strengthening offshore wind development opportunities in the area.
Portland Port, which has a history of servicing the offshore wind sector, is in talks with potential partners to support the future construction and operation of offshore wind projects in the English Channel. With its deep-water berths and extensive quayside space, the port has the capacity to host both construction and operational headquarters, as well as provide support accommodation and transport solutions.
The offshore wind and port infrastructure are integral components of Dorset’s Clean Energy Super Cluster, which seeks to drive economic transformation, foster new training opportunities, and create local employment within the region.
Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ingka Group, holds a 20% stake in Source Galileo’s UK offshore wind projects, including PortWind. The project has secured a 2.5GW grid connection to the Chickerell 400kV substation near Weymouth, which includes provisions for a 350MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The project remains in its early stages, with development areas subject to future leasing rounds by the Crown Estate.
Garrett Morrison, Chief Development Officer at Source Galileo, commented, “Source Galileo is developing a portfolio of projects that will generate substantial clean renewable energy direct to homes and businesses across the UK. We look forward to working with Portland Port and collaborating with wider potential partners to develop solutions that will assist the UK Government to attract international investment, accelerate delivery of offshore wind projects, contribute to energy security, support supply chain development, training and job creation in Dorset and the wider South West.
Ian McQuade, General Manager – Commercial at Portland Port, added, “The Portland Port team are committed to working with Source Galileo and wider partners to champion renewable energy deployment in the English Channel, serviced from the port to secure positive benefits for Dorset businesses and communities. It is still early days for the PortWind project, but this MoU shows the direction of travel and supports our Green Energy Island aspiration for Portland to become a leading renewable energy hub on the south coast.
