Klaipeda Port Authority in Lithuania has moved forward with vital upgrades to its infrastructure to support offshore wind projects, signing a contract for the reconstruction of quays on the Smelte peninsula. The contract was awarded to UAB Tilsta, the successful tender winner, which will overhaul the quays at the former International Ferry Port.

The reconstructed quays will be specifically designed to accommodate the assembly, handling, storage, and transportation of wind turbines, with a focus on supporting high load capacities of up to 40 tonnes per square meter. A total of 453 meters of quays are set to be rebuilt as part of the project.

In addition to the quay reconstruction, UAB Tilsta will also carry out dredging works to deepen the quays from the current depth of 10 meters to 12 meters, further enhancing the port’s ability to handle the logistics required for offshore wind energy development.

“The signing of the quays reconstruction contract signals the readiness of Klaipėda Port to take an active part in the development of offshore wind energy,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. “The reconstruction of quays is not only the infrastructure upgrade, but also a contribution of Klaipėda Port to the new generation energy projects. We are laying the foundations that will allow for offshore wind energy to become a significant part of the country’s energy sector.”

The project follows the May 2022 investment agreement between Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Klaipėda Stevedoring Company KLASCO, which outlined plans to develop the port’s infrastructure to support Lithuania’s planned expansion of offshore wind farms.

The technical design for the quay reconstruction was developed by UAB Hidrosfera, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The total value of the contract is €36.6 million, excluding VAT.

This development marks a significant step in Lithuania’s efforts to harness offshore wind energy and strengthen its renewable energy capabilities.
