Amazon and Iberdrola have strengthened their global renewable energy partnership by adding 476MW of new power purchase agreements (PPAs). The agreements include Amazon's first PPA in Portugal, a 219MW agreement from the Tamega Wind Complex, set to begin construction in early 2025. Additionally, the partnership has expanded into Spain, where two new utility-scale PPAs totaling 257MW have been signed, combining solar and wind energy projects.
The three new projects will collectively provide 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity annually, further supporting Amazon's renewable energy goals. The Tamega Wind Complex, located in Portugal, is notable for being the country's largest green hybridisation project, designed to maximize the use of grid infrastructure already established at the Tamega hydroelectric complex. Iberdrola is investing approximately €350 million in the 274MW project, which is expected to generate over 700 jobs during peak construction.
In Spain, Amazon has committed to purchasing 212MW of capacity from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar plant in Salamanca. Iberdrola is investing €200 million in the 274MW project, which will create more than 800 jobs at the peak of construction. Iberdrola has also committed to supporting the restoration of the Plaza Amayuelas town square in Ciudad Rodrigo as part of the project's community engagement efforts. Furthermore, Amazon will purchase 50MW from the Valdemoro wind farm in Burgos, a project consisting of 11 wind turbines with a total height of 107.5 meters.
The new PPAs are aligned with Amazon's commitment to matching its energy consumption with 100% renewable energy as part of its broader goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. With over 600 renewable projects globally, Amazon continues to be the world's largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, a title it has held for five consecutive years according to Bloomberg NEF.
Iberdrola also continues to expand its leadership in the renewable energy sector, having been named Europe's top seller of PPAs for a second consecutive year by the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report. Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola, commented, “With Amazon, we have a partnership that truly matches our own commitment to develop sustainable energy and drive the energy transition forward around the world.
Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, added, “Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europe's transition to more sustainable energy sources.”
The collaboration between Amazon and Iberdrola also extends to the technology sector, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) selected by Iberdrola as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence workloads. Through this partnership, Iberdrola is leveraging AWS's cloud computing power to optimize wind farm designs and improve weather forecasting simulations across its global operations.
