The Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council (SOWEC) has published a report aimed at helping offshore wind developers leverage innovation projects to boost Scotland’s supply chain. Developed in collaboration with the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the SOWEC Innovation Guide showcases the cutting-edge technologies and projects currently advancing in Scotland’s offshore wind sector.
Launched to coincide with the Scottish Renewables Offshore Wind Conference 2025, the report emphasizes various innovative initiatives, including advancements in undersea cabling surveying, drone turbine inspections, and subsea battery storage. The guide highlights several best practice projects from both developers and academia, demonstrating positive results in driving innovation within the industry.
One notable example is Airspection, an aerospace manufacturer that has developed a specialized drone for offshore wind turbine surveys. The drone, equipped with “beyond line of sight” technology, can conduct detailed inspections remotely, potentially reducing the need for on-site personnel. Trials for the new technology are expected to take place in 2025.
Inverkeithing-based Pict Offshore has also contributed to improving safety standards in offshore wind operations. Its “get up safe” system uses a hoist lift to transport crew members from vessels to the main access platform of an offshore turbine. The safety system is currently operational at Ørsted’s Hornsea 2 wind farm and other Ørsted projects in the U.S.
Andrew Macdonald, Director of Development and Operations at ORE Catapult and Chair of the SOWEC Innovation subgroup, emphasized the importance of maintaining innovation in the sector, saying: “Scotland has a proud history of driving innovation within the energy sector, and with the offshore wind supply chain at a crucial stage of its development, we need to ensure we are maximising opportunities for Scottish companies and academics to stay ahead of the curve. The wealth of knowledge from members of the SOWEC Innovation subgroup is the foundation for this guide which showcases the breadth of activity across Scotland and the importance of having a joined-up approach to supporting innovations from concept to commercialization.
