RWE has announced plans to construct a new control centre in the municipality of Jemgum, East Frisia, which will oversee the company's offshore wind farms in Germany and across continental Europe. Approximately 50 RWE employees are set to relocate to the centre, which is expected to open in the spring of 2026.
The control centre, being developed by Real Immobilien on a 4,700-square-metre site, will allow RWE to monitor and manage its existing and future offshore wind operations around the clock. The company will lease the building on a long-term basis.
Construction work began today with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, and subject to the approval of permits, full construction is anticipated to begin in the coming weeks, with completion slated for autumn. Following this, the interior offices and technical equipment for the control room will be installed.
Jenny Daun, First District Councillor of the Leer district, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are pleased that the Leer district is apparently perceived as an attractive location when it comes to the settlement of companies involved in the energy transition.” Hans-Peter Heikens, Mayor of Jemgum, also welcomed the development, adding, “I am convinced that our community will benefit in many ways from the new control center for offshore wind farms.
The two-storey building will incorporate sustainable design features, including the use of recycled materials and energy-efficient construction methods. Plans also include the use of renewable energy for electricity and heating, alongside water-saving measures. The goal is to achieve certification according to the “Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings” (QNG) from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building.
Derk Niklas Janssen, the future RWE operations manager for the site, said, “We are delighted to find our new home port here in Jemgum. With this new building, we will offer our employees a modern and optimal working environment. But not only our existing operations team will feel at home here. We want to continue to grow and are looking for qualified personnel – especially here in the region.” The new centre will also function as a project office for the North Sea Cluster operations.
