The African Development Bank (AfDB) has issued a tender seeking consultants to conduct technical due diligence for four solar projects to be connected to battery storage in Mauritius. The four projects are expected to have a combined capacity of 100 MW and will be constructed by independent power producers.
While the tender document did not provide further technical or financial details, interested consultants have until May 19 to submit their offers.
This move follows the recent tender for 10 MW of solar capacity in La Valette, Bambous, issued by Landscope Mauritius, a government-owned property developer. Mauritius currently has an installed capacity of 110 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and did not add any new capacity in 2022.
In March 2022, the Central Electricity Board (CEB) of Mauritius issued two tenders for the deployment of 140 MW of solar-plus-storage capacity, while the government has been supporting distributed solar through net metering and rebate schemes.
The AfDB's support for these storage-connected solar projects is a positive step towards increasing the share of renewable energy in Mauritius and achieving its energy transition goals. With more solar projects in the pipeline, it is hoped that the country will continue to make significant progress towards a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
