Renewable energy developer Voltalia has started construction on the 100-megawatt (MW) Spitalla solar farm in Albania’s Durres region. The project, slated for completion in the second half of 2027, will contribute to Albania’s energy transition by providing competitively priced electricity for both local and export markets.

Under a public contract secured in 2021, 70% of the electricity generated by the solar farm will be sold to the state, while the remaining output will be sold to private buyers.

The Spitalla project follows Voltalia’s successful commissioning of the 140MW Karavasta 1 solar farm in December 2023, the largest in the Western Balkans. The Karavasta facility is projected to cut 7% of emissions from Albania’s industrial sector, highlighting the country’s commitment to expanding renewable energy production.

“We are proud to announce the construction of the Spitalla power plant,” said Voltalia CEO Sébastien Clerc. “These initiatives illustrate our ability to carry out projects that contribute to the greening of electricity production in Albania while strengthening the national economy with competitive electricity, both locally and for export.”

The Spitalla solar farm represents a significant step forward for Albania’s renewable energy goals, reinforcing its position as a growing player in the regional clean energy market.
