Toyota Tsusho Corporation has announced an expansion of the under-construction Gulf of Suez Wind Farm II project in Egypt. The facility, initially planned for 504 MW, will now have a total installed capacity of 654 MW following the addition of 150 MW.
The wind farm, located in the Gulf of El Zayt near the existing 262.5-MW Gulf of Suez Wind Farm I, will see its total investment rise to $790 million, up from $660 million. The project is expected to begin commercial operations in August 2025, supplying electricity to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The 150-MW capacity boost involves the installation of 20 turbines, each with an individual capacity of 7.5 MW, which Toyota Tsusho highlights will make Gulf of Suez Wind Farm II the largest wind facility in Africa.
Ownership of the project is split between Toyota Tsusho Group (40%), France-based Engie SA (35%), and Egypt's Orascom Construction Plc (25%). The expansion underscores the increasing emphasis on renewable energy in Egypt and the broader African region.
