Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) has completed its 179-MW White Wing Ranch solar project in Yuma County, Arizona, which is now operational. Supported by a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Verizon Communications, White Wing Ranch adds to LRE's renewable energy portfolio, bringing its total operating capacity to over 3.3 GW.
The solar array, which spans approximately 1,400 acres of privately-owned land, connects to the 500-kV Hoodoo Wash Switchyard. This marks the first of multiple solar projects that LRE plans to develop in Yuma County.
LRE used First Solar's advanced Series 7 photovoltaic modules, known for their improved efficiency, rapid installation, and lower-carbon footprint compared to conventional crystalline silicon panels. Terabase Energy's Terafab technology was also integrated, aiding construction and efficiency.
Jason Allen, CEO of LRE, commented, “We are pleased to begin operations at White Wing Ranch and support Verizon's sustainability goals. We are excited for the future of renewable energy in the region and are committed to contributing meaningfully to the community.”
White Wing Ranch is expected to be in service for over 30 years, with projected economic benefits for the local community and a significant property tax contribution for Yuma County.
