UK-based renewables asset manager Windel Energy and Canadian Solar Inc.'s (NASDAQ: CSIQ) Recurrent Energy have submitted a planning application for a proposed 150-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Dorset, England. The application was lodged with the Dorset Council, the joint venture (JV) partners announced.
The Buckland BESS is intended to be situated near Weymouth and will connect to an existing substation via underground cables. If approved and constructed, the facility will enhance the reliability and responsiveness of the national grid while increasing its capacity to integrate more renewable energy sources. The system is designed to store excess electricity during periods of high generation and discharge it back into the grid during peak demand times.
“This is a very positive development proposal which has the potential to support local and national renewable energy generation, strengthen the resilience of the National Grid, and support Dorset Council's climate goals,” said Jamie Knott, managing director at Windel Energy.
In addition to the Buckland project, Windel Energy and Recurrent Energy recently launched a second consultation for a solar-storage hybrid park in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire, through their partnership, Fosse Green Energy.
