Statkraft has been allocated €107 million in funding from the EU Innovation Fund for a 200MW electrolyser project in Emden, Lower Saxony, Germany. The project, aimed at producing up to 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and generating up to 50,000MWh annually, also includes a 50MW heat pump system. This initiative represents a key step in Statkraft's green hydrogen ambitions in Germany.
The company already supplies industrial customers in Emden with district heating from a biomass plant, and the new hydrogen plant will further expand its clean energy offerings. Statkraft has signed several letters of intent with potential customers for both green hydrogen and clean district heating in the region.
In addition to this large-scale project, Statkraft is advancing its hydrogen pilot project, developing a 10MW electrolyser at the same Emden site. The green hydrogen produced will supply filling stations in the area. The company expects to make an investment decision on the construction of this plant later this year.
The EU funding will support Statkraft in advancing its goal of becoming a leading producer of green hydrogen in Germany, furthering Europe's transition to low-carbon technologies.
