The Philippines' Department of Energy has granted certificates of confirmation of commerciality for three offshore wind projects, totaling 1.65 GW in capacity. These projects are being developed by a consortium comprising Triconti Windkraft Group, Sea Wind Holdings, and Stream Invest Holding.
The awarded projects include the 450 MW Frontera Bay wind power project and the Guimaras Strait Project, with two phases of 600 MW each, totaling 1.2 GW. The consortium intends to propose these projects for inclusion in the Philippines' first offshore wind auction, scheduled for 2025. All the projects will utilize fixed-bottom technology.
The Philippines aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. In 2022, renewables accounted for 22% of the country's power mix, with geothermal making up 10%, hydropower at 9%, and 1% each from wind, solar, and biomass. As of 2023, the country had 427 MW of onshore wind capacity but no offshore wind installations.
