Germany's economy ministry, along with representatives from European wind turbine manufacturers, reached an agreement on a package of measures aimed at ensuring fair international competition and reducing dependencies within the sector. This announcement was made following a meeting on Wednesday.
The primary objective of the package is to foster growth and value creation in the wind energy sector. Key components of the action plan include enhancing the cybersecurity of wind turbines and securing financing to boost production capabilities. Notably, the plan also emphasizes the need to review public financing to address potential market distortions.
The ministry stated that the next meeting to assess the progress of these implementations is scheduled for early 2025.
The German Wind Energy Association (BWE) expressed support for the new measures, particularly those focused on cybersecurity, and called for prompt execution. WindEurope, the European wind energy umbrella association, also endorsed the initiative, emphasizing the need to eliminate unfairly subsidized prices and distorted financing conditions in Europe.
Concerns regarding fair competition were highlighted in September when German wind turbine manufacturers Enercon GmbH and Nordex SE voiced their apprehensions about unfair practices from Chinese competitors. These concerns intensified following a deal in July that allowed Chinese suppliers to enter the German market, prompting calls for a more equitable manufacturing environment in the sector.
