Finnish technology group Wärtsilä Corp has announced that it has secured a contract to supply a 150-MW/300-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to Canadian clean energy platform Amp Energy in South Australia.
This order marks the first stage of a large-scale renewable energy hub that will integrate solar power, energy storage, and green ammonia production. The Bungama BESS is designed to enhance energy security and reliability in South Australia amid an increasing reliance on renewable energy sources.
The facility will utilize Wärtsilä's Quantum High Energy storage technology, providing essential services such as frequency control ancillary services, fast frequency response, and energy arbitrage to improve the grid's flexibility and stability. Construction at the Bungama site is scheduled to commence this month, with the battery expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026.
In addition to supplying the technology, Wärtsilä will manage the battery's operations under a long-term service agreement. Amp Energy, which is backed by private equity firm The Carlyle Group, secured a transmission network connection agreement for the Bungama battery in September, paving the way for the project's development.
