Sustainable energy company Power2X and terminal storage specialist Advario have announced a partnership to create a production and storage hub at the Port of Rotterdam for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic ultra-low carbon fuels. The project aims to achieve an annual output exceeding 250,000 tonnes.
The facility will utilize imported green methanol, derived from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon, alongside locally produced green hydrogen as feedstock. The production of e-SAF will be supported by advanced storage and logistics facilities developed by Advario, which will have a capacity of approximately 230,000 cubic meters, along with marine and rail access.
Located with direct access to European airports, the hub is strategically positioned to serve as a central distribution point for SAF and e-fuels. It is projected to fulfill 40% of the e-SAF demand in Europe, producing enough fuel to power around 7,000 flights annually between Amsterdam and New York, according to a press statement.
The chosen site spans 26 hectares and was previously operated by Dutch anode producer Aluchemie. Following its acquisition by Advario in April 2023, the company has collaborated with Power2X to repurpose the area into a hub for innovative energy solutions.
