German energy supplier EWE AG and utility SWB AG announced the delivery of an electrolyser in Bremen as part of their 10-MW green hydrogen project aimed at decarbonizing the regional steel industry. The initiative, named Hydrogen for Bremen's industrial transformation (HyBit), involves the construction of a green hydrogen plant at SWB's facility in Bremen-Mittelsbüren.
The hydrogen produced will primarily be used in raw iron production and processing at the Bremen site of steel giant ArcelorMittal SA (AMS
). A portion of the hydrogen may also be supplied to other locations, including refuelling stations.
The Plug Power electrolyser, delivered from Farmsum, Netherlands, consists of two modules that have been connected in Bremen-Mittelsbüren. The larger module, weighing approximately 32 tonnes, will facilitate the electrolysis process, while the smaller 10-tonne container serves as a utility module.
With this latest shipment, most components for the hydrogen facility have now arrived, and the next phase will involve assembling them into a complete electrolysis system, according to EWE and SWB.
The HyBit project has an estimated investment volume of around EUR 20 million (USD 21.9 million), with the state of Bremen contributing half of the funding. In February, the European Commission granted Germany approval to allocate EUR 1.3 billion in state aid to support ArcelorMittal subsidiaries in decarbonizing their steel production processes.
