Celsia SA, a Latin American power utility, announced plans to commission its 9.6-megawatt Carreto wind farm in northern Colombia by December 2024. According to a press release issued on Tuesday, the project site in the Atlántico department has recently received its wind turbines, featuring 80-meter-long blades.
The Carreto wind farm will consist of two turbines, with an anticipated annual electricity generation of around 30 gigawatt-hours. German turbine manufacturer Nordex was selected in 2022 to supply the turbines for Carreto, as well as for two other Celsia projects, Acacia and Camelias, located in La Guajira. However, the latter two projects have encountered significant delays in their development and construction.
Ricardo Sierra, CEO of Celsia, emphasized the company's commitment to exploring various regions in Colombia with favorable conditions for wind power generation. He stated, “This [Carreto] project in the Atlántico, which we have been developing quietly, is a symbol that wind can be found in other parts of the country, and that we can continue to believe in clean and efficient energy generated with this renewable resource.”
