Swiss solar fuel developer Synhelion has signed a five-year agreement to supply nearly 100 tonnes of solar fuel annually to Lake Lucerne Navigation Company AG (SGV), a local transportation firm.
SGV plans to use the solar fuel to decarbonise its fleet of steamboats, which have transitioned from coal to fossil heating oil. The fuel will be sourced from Synhelion's first commercial plant, RISE, located in Spain, which is expected to commence operations in 2027.
The facility aims to produce approximately 1,000 tonnes of solar fuel each year, including renewable kerosene, diesel, and gasoline, catering to various transportation sectors.
In June, Synhelion inaugurated its first industrial solar fuel plant in Juelich, Germany, which has the capacity to produce several thousand litres of fuel annually.
Founded in 2016 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, Synhelion's technology harnesses solar energy to convert carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral solar fuels.
