The World Bank has approved a USD 250 million (EUR 227 million) initiative in Lebanon aimed at improving the country's electricity services to ensure they are cleaner, more reliable, and efficient.
The project focuses on enhancing the operational and commercial systems of Electricite du Liban (EDL) and increasing the supply of grid-connected renewable energy.
Key components include the development of a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, the rehabilitation of the Litani River Authority (LRA) hydropower plant, and the reinforcement of the EDL transmission network.
In its announcement last week, the World Bank highlighted that Lebanon's electricity sector has faced significant challenges due to successive crises that have deteriorated its operational and financial viability.
The institution is also working to activate emergency response plans to redirect resources in its portfolio to address the ongoing crisis stemming from conflict and regional instability.
