Harmony Energy, a UK-based developer and operator of renewable energy projects, has commenced construction on a 100-MW/200-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nantes. This facility is positioned to become the largest of its kind in France.
The Chevire BESS will utilize Tesla Megapack technology and is being constructed on the site of the former Chevire fossil fuel power plant at the port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire. Once operational, the installation is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 364,000 tonnes over the next 20 years.
Spanning 1.3 hectares, the site is expected to be fully operational by winter 2025, allowing for charging and discharging of electricity sufficient to power approximately 170,000 homes for two hours.
Clement Girard, director of operations at Harmony, stated, “The Chevire storage park will provide regulation services to the Electricity Transmission Network (RTE) on a second-by-second basis and facilitate the integration of renewable energies by ‘shifting' excess production to meet peaks in consumption.”
