, a subsidiary of German energy company , is set to implement a 5-megawatt (MW)/20-megawatt hour (MWh) grid-supporting storage system in the Cham district of southeastern .

The company announced on Thursday that it will soon initiate a process to select the operator for the facility, with service fee bids being the primary criterion for selection.

The storage system is designed to replace a planned grid expansion measure, which is expected to reduce regional grid development costs. By storing energy during peak supply times, the facility will facilitate the integration of additional generation plants without necessitating further grid enhancements or expansions.

Connected to the medium-voltage network, the system will store excess energy generated from renewable sources, such as solar power, and return it to the grid when needed.

This initiative is part of Bayernwerk's strategy to accelerate the energy transition in the state of Bavaria.
