Jordan Aims to Reach 50% Renewable Energy in its Energy Mix by 2030

Jordan is pushing ahead with its renewable energy projects and plans to expand the share of renewables in its energy mix to 50% by investing in solar and wind energy projects in some areas, according to Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary General of the Jordanian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. “We will attain that target in 2030… but we will pursue our efforts to reach 50 percent...with the execution of solar and wind energy projects, we believe this target is attainable,” she said at an energy conference in Barcelona, Spain. Jordan currently produces around 2.6 GW of renewable energy, which is about 27% of the total generated electricity in the Kingdom. However, the country is determined to increase its renewable energy production to nearly 31% by 2030 with the execution of solar and wind energy projects in some areas. “We are currently in the process of conducting a comprehensive revision of the energy strategy to achieve that target. The new strategy aims to boost support for plans to switch to renewable energy and the production of green hydrogen,” Azzam said, as quoted by the Arabic language daily Addustour and other Jordanian newspapers. Jordan is blessed with abundant solar and wind resources and the country has the potential to become a leader in the production of renewable energy in the region. The country's commitment to renewable energy is driven by its vision of reducing its reliance on imported oil and gas, improving energy security, and promoting sustainable development. In line with this vision, Jordan has been implementing several renewable energy projects, including the Tafila Wind Farm, which has a capacity of 117 MW and the Ma’an Development Area, which has a capacity of 105 MW. Jordan's renewable energy sector has attracted significant investment in recent years, with local and international companies showing great interest in investing in the country's renewable energy projects. The country's favorable investment climate and supportive government policies have been instrumental in attracting such investments. The Jordanian government has been working tirelessly to create a conducive environment for renewable energy projects and the country's renewable energy sector is poised for significant growth in the coming years. As Azzam stated, "We are determined to continue our efforts to switch to renewable energy and achieve our ambitious targets. We believe that the transition to renewable energy is the key to achieving energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable development." Jordan's commitment to renewable energy is indeed commendable and the country's efforts to achieve its ambitious targets are praiseworthy. With its abundant solar and wind resources, favorable investment climate, and supportive government policies, Jordan is well-positioned to become a leader in renewable energy production in the region.
