Saudi Arabia has launched a tender for 4.5 GW of solar and wind energy projects across the Kingdom, as part of its efforts to boost the share of renewables in its energy mix.
The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), which oversees tendering and energy offtake, has issued a request for qualification (RfQ) for the sixth round of the National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP). This round includes four solar and one wind energy project.
The NREP is part of Saudi Arabia's broader goal to achieve 50% renewable energy in its power mix by 2030. To date, SPPC has allocated 19 GW of renewable capacity.
Beginning in 2024, SPPC plans to release annual tenders for an additional 20 GW of renewable projects, with the aim of reaching a total installed capacity of 100 to 130 GW by the end of the decade.
Earlier this year, SPPC signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for several major projects, including the 2-GW Haden, 2-GW Muwayh, and 1.5-GW Al Khushaybi solar projects, as well as two wind projects with a combined capacity of 1.1 GW. The wind projects were signed at a record low price of USD 15.65 per MWh, according to SPPC.
