Prime Minister Keir Starmer has revealed that Aberdeen will be the headquarters for Great British Energy, marking a key step in advancing the UK's clean energy agenda. Starmer highlighted the city's engineering expertise as vital to “kickstarting a UK-wide clean energy revolution.”
Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Starmer said, “The future of British energy will be powered… by the talent and skills of the working people in the Granite City, with GB Energy based in Aberdeen.”
Edinburgh and Glasgow will also play roles, hosting smaller sites to leverage Scotland's expertise in the sector.
Great British Energy, a publicly owned company, aims to scale up renewable energy, boost energy independence, and support economic growth across the UK. The company's headquarters will initially operate from government buildings while permanent locations are established. Juergen Maier, former CEO of Siemens UK, will serve as start-up chair alongside an interim chief executive.
The Labour government has introduced the Great British Energy Bill to Parliament and launched a partnership with the Crown Estate to accelerate offshore wind development. Backed by £8.3 billion in government funding, GB Energy seeks to attract private investment in the UK's clean energy sector.
