Powin is collaborating with BHE Renewables to develop one of the largest solar and storage microgrids in the United States. The project, located in Ravenswood, West Virginia, will provide renewable energy to Titanium Metals Corporation, Inc. (TIMET), a subsidiary of Precision Castparts, to support the manufacturing of titanium products for the global aerospace industry.
The microgrid will consist of a 106MW solar array paired with Powin's 50MW Centipede Stack800 battery energy storage system, designed for long-duration discharge of 10 to 12 hours. This deployment highlights the application of lithium-ion phosphate batteries in extended energy storage solutions.
This project is also one of Powin's first to align with the domestic content requirements outlined in the Inflation Reduction Act, aimed at strengthening the U.S. economy through the reshoring of energy infrastructure manufacturing. “This initiative not only showcases the scalability and reliability of our energy storage solutions but also underscores our commitment to advancing clean energy and economic growth in the United States,” said Powin CEO Jeff Waters.
BHE Renewables, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, will manage the construction and operation of the solar and battery system, which will be delivered in phases to match TIMET's production schedule. The first deliveries are expected in 2025, with the project reaching full capacity by 2027.
This venture is poised to contribute significantly to the renewable energy landscape in the U.S., supporting both clean energy goals and domestic manufacturing.
