Acciona Energía Secures 12-Year Contract for 189MW Solar Plant in Croatia

Credit: Acciona Energia

has been awarded a 12-year Contract for Difference (CfD) by Hrvatski Operator Trzista Energije (HROTE), Croatia's energy regulator, for the development of the 189MW Promina photovoltaic plant. The project, located in the province of Sibenik-Knin in southern Croatia, is set to become the largest plant in the country upon its completion in 2027.

The Promina solar plant will feature over 300,000 photovoltaic modules, generating approximately 320GWh of clean annually. This output is projected to meet the energy needs of around 69,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 140,000 tonnes per year.

The CfD was awarded through a competitive public auction as part of a support program launched by the Croatian government and HROTE, with approval from the European Commission.

In addition to the solar plant, Acciona Energía will construct a new 400kV interconnection substation at the site to connect the generated energy to the national transmission grid.

The Promina project will also contribute to Acciona Energía's Social Impact Management programme, which reinvests a portion of its annual income into improving local training, well-being, and environmental management.

This initiative marks a significant expansion of Acciona Energía's presence in the Croatian sector. The company is already involved in several wind projects in Croatia, including the Opor (27MW), Boraja 2 (45MW), and Jelinak wind complex (30MW), which has been operational since 2013. With these projects, Acciona Energía is anticipated to become a major player in the Croatian clean energy market, accounting for about 8% of the total installed renewable power and 20% of installed solar capacity.
