SSE Commences Construction of 50MW Wind Farm in Scottish Highlands

Construction has begun on SSE's 50MW wind farm in Aberarder, located in Strathnairn near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The project, which will feature 12 turbines supplied and installed by , represents a circa £100 million investment and is expected to be completed by late 2026.

Once operational, the wind farm will generate enough green energy to power nearly 60,000 homes annually and reduce approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in its first year.

The Aberarder Wind Farm secured a 15-year contract for low-carbon power generation in the UK's fifth contract for difference allocation round in September 2023. The project is situated on a natural plateau at an average altitude of 700 meters above sea level, adjacent to the operational 94MW Dunmaglass Wind Farm, which is jointly owned by and UK Wind.

Heather Donald, Director of Onshore Renewables Development & Construction at SSE, remarked, “Beginning construction of our Aberarder Wind Farm project is a significant milestone for SSE Renewables and for our onshore wind portfolio. This project will play its part in supporting and the UK's net zero targets, producing homegrown clean power and helping secure a future.”
