RWE, the German renewable energy company, has broken ground on the onshore substation for its Thor offshore wind farm, which will generate 1GW of energy in Denmark. The onshore substation will be built in the municipality of Lemvig, and Siemens Energy will carry out the civil engineering and construction works alongside MT Højgaard Danmark, one of Denmark's leading companies for large-scale building and infrastructure projects.
The ground-breaking ceremony, which took place on May 4, was attended by several high-profile individuals, including the chairman of the technology and environment committee of the Municipality of Lemvig, the senior vice president of the Confederation of Danish Industry, and the chief executive of Green Power Denmark. RWE Renewables Denmark's CEO was also present, as was the director of Siemens Energy Denmark.
Mayor of Lemvig Erik Flyvholm commented on the significance of the ceremony, stating that it marked the beginning of a massive wind project and an energy adventure in Northwestern Jutland. He expressed his desire for a fruitful partnership with RWE that would benefit both parties.
RWE's CEO, Pia Lanken, emphasized the company's commitment to working closely with local communities, politicians, fishermen, and educational institutions. She noted that RWE had committed to employing at least 30 vocational trainees for the Thor offshore wind farm project and expected to recruit at least 60 local people for operation and maintenance.
The Thor offshore wind farm will be built in the Danish part of the North Sea, approximately 22km off the coast of Thorsminde. RWE's investment in this project will contribute significantly to Denmark's green transition, and the project will create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.
