DH2 Energy Secures Key Permit for Hysencia Hybrid Plant in Spain

-based DH2 Energy has obtained the Integrated Environmental Authorisation (IEA) for its Hysencia hybrid plant, a 35MW electrolysis and 49MWp project in Aragon, Spain. This milestone makes Hysencia one of the few commercial renewable production projects with such a permit in Spain and .

The Hysencia project was one of the winners in the first European renewable hydrogen auction held last April, where the European Commission selected seven projects out of 132 submissions from across Europe.

“Obtaining the Integrated Environmental Authorisation represents an important milestone for the Hysencia project and DH2 Energy's significant portfolio of projects under development,” said Raquel Fernández Corzo, DH2 Energy's renewable hydrogen projects development director for Spain. “Hysencia is one of the most advanced commercial-scale renewable hydrogen production plants in Spain.”

The project is set to begin construction in early 2025 and will occupy a 100-hectare site in Plasencia del Monte, within the municipality of La Sotonera, Aragon. It aims to produce 1,700 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and is expected to avoid the emission of approximately 16,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. The renewable hydrogen will be supplied to the mobility and industrial sectors.

The Hysencia plant will utilize a captive solar energy facility to generate 99 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, powering the electrolyser. Additionally, the project includes a 10MW connection to the electricity grid.

The plant's location is strategically advantageous for supplying renewable hydrogen to the transport sector, being near key transport routes, including the Huesca-Canfranc railway line. “This project has a territorial vocation and will have a very positive impact in Aragon, during both the construction and operational phases for the generation of its as a clean energy vector,” Fernández Corzo added.
