Ocean Winds and Martifer Renewables & Energy have announced a strategic partnership to jointly participate in Portugal's inaugural tender for offshore wind farms, slated for this year.
The collaboration leverages Ocean Winds' experience, including its operation of the WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind farm in Portugal, and Martifer Renewables & Energy's comprehensive understanding of the Portuguese market.
By working together on floating offshore wind projects, the partnership aims to support Portugal's renewable energy goals, targeting 2GW by 2030.
“Portugal is at a unique position of accelerating the development of the proven offshore wind technology off its coasts,” said José Pinheiro, country manager South Europe for Ocean Winds. “We are thrilled to join forces with Martifer Renewables & Energy for the first historic tender, that should soon be announced.”
Pinheiro highlighted Ocean Winds' success with WindFloat Atlantic from its operations base in Viana do Castelo. He emphasized the benefits of combining Ocean Winds' international offshore wind expertise with Martifer's local market knowledge and industrial capabilities, which will enhance the delivery of efficient and sustainable offshore wind projects.
Pedro Duarte, chief executive of Martifer Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “This cooperation not only reinforces our commitment to sustainability, but also highlights our robust experience and know-how accumulated over the years in the energy sector. Together, we will be able to deliver innovation and set new standards of excellence in the offshore wind sector, making a significant contribution to the country's energy transition.”
As the industry awaits the final criteria for the tender, Ocean Winds and Martifer are preparing comprehensive proposals, involving key national suppliers and infrastructure, in line with national objectives to support Portugal's energy transition.
This partnership is expected to stimulate economic growth, create high-quality jobs, and introduce innovative technologies to the Portuguese offshore wind market.
