Construction has begun on Sunrise Wind, New York's largest offshore wind project, Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed. The 924MW wind farm, developed by Ørsted, will provide clean energy for approximately 600,000 homes in New York upon completion.
The wind farm is located around 30 miles east of Montauk, New York. It features an approved transmission route connecting to the state's electricity grid at the Holbrook Substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County.
Sunrise Wind has completed all major federal and state permitting milestones and received approval for its Construction and Operations Plan (COP) from the US Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on June 21, 2024.
Following Eversource Energy's divestment of its 50% share, Ørsted now fully owns Sunrise Wind. The purchase price at closing was $152 million. Initially valued at $230 million at signing in January 2024, the transaction's final amount was adjusted due to lower actual versus forecast CAPEX spend between signing and closing.
Governor Hochul stated, “This project marks a significant step forward in New York's commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.”
