state has commenced construction on its ambitious A$5 billion CopperString transmission project, marking a significant step towards bolstering the integration of sources like into the grid.

The project, confirmed on July 10, has broken ground on its first major workforce accommodation site, managed by ATCO Structures and scheduled for completion by early 2025.

CopperString 2.0 will span nearly 1,000km of high-voltage transmission lines, linking the North West Minerals Province to the National Market (NEM). This endeavor, funded in part by coal royalties amounting to A$500 million, is anticipated to unlock 6GW of renewable energy capacity upon its completion in 2029.

Located at the heart of the project, Hughenden, southwest of Townsville City, will serve as a pivotal hub for its development under Queensland government-owned network operator Powerlink.

Former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk highlighted in 2023 that the initiative aims to transform Townsville into a leading renewable manufacturing center, complementing its designation as a local renewable energy zone (LREZ).

Current Queensland Premier Steven Miles emphasized the transformative impact of CopperString, envisioning enhanced mining opportunities, job creation, and the unlocking of critical minerals crucial for renewable technology development in Queensland's North and North West regions.

The project aligns with the state's ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming for 70% renewable energy by 2032 and supporting a broader roadmap that includes 12 Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) across Queensland.
