Finnish technology group, Wartsila, has secured another order from EDF Renewables UK for a grid-scale energy storage system in Bramford, the UK. This marks the sixth project between the two companies, showcasing their strong and long-term partnership. The new project is designed to support the UK's transition to a decarbonised electricity system and to help achieve the country's net zero goals.
The energy storage system will be rated at 57MW/114MWh, making it Wartsila's largest grid-scale energy storage project in the UK. The facility will be connected to the transmission network, allowing for the integration of renewable energy into the grid, and will help improve the resilience of the UK's electricity system. The Bramford project will also have the capability to support future developments in electric vehicle charging and the electrification of public transport, as seen in its sister project in Oxford.

Gabriele Buccini, Senior Business Development Manager, Energy Storage and Optimisation at Wartsila, expressed his excitement about the project: “While greater integration of renewables into the UK's electricity grid is critical to supporting the transition to net zero, smart power infrastructure is needed to manage its intermittency and improve the resilience of the UK's electricity system. That is exactly what the Bramford project is helping to do, and deliver cleaner, more reliable power to the country.”
The order was booked in the first quarter of 2023 and is expected to be delivered in 2024, adding to Wartsila's growing energy storage portfolio in the UK which now exceeds 1GWh. In addition to the Bramford project, Wartsila is also delivering three other projects under construction in Birmingham, Coventry and Sundon, further solidifying their position in the energy storage market.
As the demand for energy storage solutions continues to grow, Wartsila is well-positioned to help support the transition to a decarbonised future. The company is focused on delivering sustainable solutions that enable customers to achieve their climate targets while also ensuring reliable power supply.

EDF Renewables UK also commented on the project: “EDF Renewables is delighted to work again with Wartsila in the development of our energy storage portfolio in the UK. The Bramford project is a key addition to our growing portfolio, and we look forward to delivering this project in partnership with Wartsila.”
With this repeat order, Wartsila and EDF Renewables UK continue to demonstrate their commitment to advancing renewable energy in the UK and building a sustainable future.
