50Hertz has officially inaugurated Europe's largest solar power plant, the 650MWp Witznitz Energy Park, located south of Leipzig. Developed over two years on a reclaimed lignite mining area spanning approximately 500 hectares across Neukieritzsch, Böhlen, and Rötha municipalities near Hainer See, the facility marks a significant advancement in renewable energy infrastructure.
In a pioneering achievement for solar power plants, the Witznitz Energy Park injects electricity directly at extra-high voltage while actively contributing to grid stability throughout day and night cycles, according to 50Hertz.
Although the Energy Park began injecting electricity into the grid in December 2023, it has recently reached full operational capacity after completing multiple phases of construction.
Stefan Kapfere, CEO of 50Hertz, highlighted the park's technological innovations, stating, “By activating reactive power and incorporating the solar plant into our congestion management, we're once again doing pioneering work to make as much electricity from renewable energies usable as the grid will allow.”
The Witznitz Energy Park's integration into Germany's energy network signifies a step forward in sustainable energy production, leveraging advanced grid solutions to maximize the utilization of renewable resources.
