Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul Group, in partnership with South Korea's LS Cable & System, has been awarded a contract to supply, install, and test three subsea cables for the Princess Elisabeth Island project off Belgium's coast.
The 220-kV alternating current cables, totaling 165 km (102.5 miles) in length, will serve to transmit offshore wind power from the Princess Elisabeth wind zone to Belgium's onshore high-voltage grid.
Located approximately 45 km offshore, Princess Elisabeth Island is being developed by a joint venture involving Jan De Nul Group. Designed as a central hub, the island will facilitate the collection and transmission of electricity from the 3.5-GW wind zone, with future plans to connect to other North Sea countries like the UK and Denmark.
Once operational, Princess Elisabeth Island is expected to provide renewable energy to approximately 3.5 million Belgian households.
The contract awarded to Jan De Nul and LS Cable & System encompasses all aspects from design and engineering to production, transportation, installation, and final testing of the three cables.
LS Cable & System will manage cable design and production at its facility in South Korea, while Jan De Nul will utilize its fleet for transportation, installation, and protection of the cables during the project, scheduled for completion in 2028.
