Japan Launches 2024 Subsidy Program to Promote Geothermal Power Development

's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, has announced the recipients of the 2024 subsidy program aimed at advancing power generation. The initiative focuses on enhancing community awareness and support for geothermal resource development activities in various regions of Japan.

Under this subsidy program, local agencies will undertake projects designed to educate residents about geothermal energy. These projects include organizing study sessions, conducting hot spring impact surveys, and facilitating public forums to promote understanding among local communities where geothermal projects are ongoing or planned for the future.

For instance, in Hokkaido's Rausu Town, the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry plans to gather information and engage residents through study sessions and public councils. Similarly, the Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry aims to foster understanding in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, through events like roundtable discussions and site tours.

Other initiatives include drilling a hot water supply well in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, to benefit local hot spring facilities and increase community confidence in geothermal projects. In Myoko City, the focus is on organizing meetings and study groups to share information about geothermal development and regional planning measures.

The subsidy recipients, supported by the Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry, will also promote geothermal awareness in Oita Prefecture through various public engagement activities, including symposiums, educational events for children, and business tours.

These efforts underscore Japan's commitment to diversifying its energy mix and promoting sustainable development through the utilization of geothermal resources. By involving local communities in these initiatives, the government aims to build broader support and ensure informed decision-making regarding geothermal energy projects.
