Helsinki-listed technology firm Merus Power (HEL:MERUS) has secured a significant contract from Swiss power producer Alpiq to install a locally-manufactured 30-megawatt (MW) / 36-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Finland. The deal, valued at nearly EUR 20 million (USD 21.4 million), includes provisions for future utilization of Merus Power's trading service, the companies announced on Wednesday.
The BESS project, located in Valkeakoski municipality, will be integrated into the network operated by Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj, with operations expected to commence by summer 2025. This initiative marks one of the largest battery energy storage systems in Finland in terms of both power and energy capacity, focusing on providing frequency reserve services.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Alpiq on this landmark project,” said a spokesperson from Merus Power, highlighting the project's strategic significance in enhancing Finland's grid stability through advanced energy storage solutions.
Merus Power has completed the project development phase and will oversee the comprehensive supply and installation of the BESS.
